Abstract

A tubular film of thermoplastic material, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, is formed by feeding the material through a pipe 1 and an annular passage 3 to an extrusion orifice. The material is cooled in the die by a liquid, e.g. a eutectic mixture of diphenyl and diphenyl oxide, which is caused to boil in chambers 5, 51 by the heat extracted from the material. A coolant is <PICT:0820620/IV (a)/1> passed through rings 6, 61 to condense vapour in the reservoirs 5,51. The die is heated by electrical units 7, 71 to bring it to the required temperature at the commencement of extrusion; it is surrounded by lagging 8. The walls of the die may be parallel or may converge towards the extrusion orifice. In a modification, the cooling chamber may be omitted from the core. The tube may be removed at a rate greater than that of extrusion to cause thinning of the tube.
