Abstract

817,523. Electrolytic production of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine. NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Aug. 23, 1957 [Sept. 10, 1956], No. 26758/57. Class 41. Unsymmetrical. dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) is produced by electrolytically reducing in aqueous solution N-nitrosodimethylamine. Preferably the process is effected in acid solution, e.g. sulphuric, acid, hydrochloric acid, acetic acid but conducting salts such as sodium sulphate and ammonium chloride may be used instead of acids. Typically the solution contains 1 mol. of sulphuric acid per mol. of the nitrosodimethylamine and up to 0.5 of the nitrosodimethylamine per 150 ml. of water and the cathode current density may be from 0.023 to 0.24 amps/sq. cm. at a temperature of 0‹ to 80‹ C. The cathode may be mercury, lead, graphite or other non-reactive material while the anode may be of lead, and the cell is divided into catholyte and anolyte compartments by a porous diaphragm. The UDMH is separated from the catholyte by neutralizing, preferably first partially with lime and then with sodium hydroxide, filtering, and then fractionally distilling off the UDMH from the neutralized solution.
