Abstract

Filaments, especially thermoplastic filaments, are heat-treated by traversing them through a bath consisting of a mass of hot metal balls or granules. The filaments may be stretched by admitting them to the bath at a predetermined linear rate, traversing them along a rectilinear submerged path through the bath, and continuously withdrawing them at a predetermined linear rate greater than the supply rate. The balls or granules may be of steel, preferably stainless steel, and the effective density of the bath may be controlled magnetically, e.g. by one or more permanent magnets or electromagnets disposed below the bath to attract the balls or granules downwards. The bath may be heated by an electric resistance heating device, and the temperature may be controlled thermostatically. The invention may be applied to the hot stretching of thermoplastic synthetic polyamide filaments, e.g. nylon, and other synthetic thermoplastic filaments, e.g. "Terylene" (Registered Trade Mark), and to the polyresination by heat of urea-formaldehyde or phenol-urea condensate resins on or in cotton or woollen yarns.ALSO:Wire is heat - treated by traversing it through a bath consisting of a mass of hot metal balls or granules.
