A rotary valve for transferring material from one space to another without appreciable leakage of gas comprises a casing having spring-loaded end walls 12, 14 and a rotor 34, the impervious vanes of which are tipped with resilient cylinders 36. These cylinders are slotted longitudinally and are made from relatively soft resilient material such as aluminium or that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Teflon." The rotor shaft 28 is mounted in bearings 24, 26 in fixed members 20, 22.
