Abstract

Shell moulding and core compositions comprise 100 parts (by weight) of sand, 2-10 parts of a two-stage phenol-formaldehyde resin, and 0.5-10 per cent by weight of the resin of a boric resin. The resin and boric acid may be mixed and then added to the sand, or the sand may be coated with the resin and the boric acid added subsequently. Specified sands are Redhill grade H, fine Chelford or pure silica sands, or zircon sand, preferably of 100-150 B.S. mesh. Specified resins are derived from phenol, cresol, xylenol or phenol-cresol mixtures. Preferred boric acid is ortho-boric. Lubricants and wetting agents may also be added.
