Abstract

A fuel composition for a two-stroke engine comprises a gasoline, 2 to 10 per cent by weight based on the gasoline of a mineral lubricating oil, and an oil-soluble barium compound in an amount sufficient to provide at least 0.01 per cent by weight of the composition of barium calculated as the metal. The barium compound may be a barium salt of an alkyl phenol having one or two C3 to C24 alkyl groups, preferably branched chain groups, such as tertiary octyl phenol, or a barium salt of a sulphurized phenol, a naphthenic acid, a sulphonic acid, or a carboxylic acid having 10 or more carbon atoms. The barium compound and the lubricating oil may be added to a gasoline, or the barium compound and the lubricating oil may be mixed with a mineral oil diluent boiling between 200 DEG and 600 DEG F., such as a kerosene or white spirit, to provide an additive containing 1 to 25 per cent by weight of the barium compound for mixing with a gasoline. The fuel composition preferably contains between 0.01 and 1 per cent by weight of barium and 0.1 to 5 per cent by weight of the mineral oil diluent boiling between 200 DEG and 600 DEG F. The lubricating oil preferably is a naphthenic oil having a viscosity between 35 and 125 s.s.u. at 210 DEG F. and a viscosity index below 85, preferably below 70. The compositions may also contain a copolymer of a C11 to C24 unsaturated mono-carboxylic acid, such as oleic acid, with C2 to C6 alkylene oxide, such as ethylene oxide. In examples, fuels contain gasoline, lubricating oil, the barium salts of sulphurized tertiary octyl phenol and sulphonated wax, and tetraethyl lead.
