Abstract
792,814. Travelling-wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 2, 1955 [Sept. 3, 1954], No. 25284/55. Addition to 767,078. Class 39(1). In a travelling-wave amplifier tube in which one or more helices 1, 2 are carried by low loss dielectric rods 3 held within and connected rigidly at each end to a hollow dielectric tube which is rigidly connected to the gun and in which a thin layer of resistive (lossy) material is provided on the dielectric tube, the diameter of the layer being such as to suppress feedback as claimed in Claim 2 of the parent Specification there are two helices 1, 2 carrying different D.C. potentials, the D.C. connection to the helix 2 more remote from the gun being made by the thin layer 11 of resistive (lossy: material. The ceramic rods 3 are common to the two helices and are held by cups 4, 7 surrounding the gun and collector while similar cups 5, 6 surround the helix ends ; cups 4, 5, 6, 7 form inner choke sleeve members co-operating with rect angular waveguide feeders coupling being achieved by L probes 8, 9 and hollow impedance matching members 13. The sleeves 5, 6 are secured to dielectric tube 10. The lossy coating 11 is continuous from end to end of the dielectric tube except for a ring-shaped region near the gun end and the parts are respectively connected to cup 6 via ring 12 and directly to cup 5. The D.C. connection to helix 2 is thus via L probe 9, ring 12, resistive coating 11, clamp 17 and lead 15 passing to the base of the tube through insulating bushing 14. while D.C. to helix 1 is through antenna 8, cup 5, impedance matching member 13, cup 4 and lead 16.
