Abstract

To remove fluorides dissolved therein, water is subjected to treatment at a temperature of 50 DEG C. or more with tri-calcium orthophosphate, and calcium carbonate and/or magnesium carbonate. The reagents may be added to the water either singly or together. When the water to be treated is alkaline, or becomes so on boiling, ammonium chloride may be added to the reacting substances. The treated water may be passed subsequently to a conventional water filter. In one example fluoride-containing water was boiled for a quarter-of-an-hour with commercial-grade tri-calcium orthophosphate and powdered marble chips. In another example the same procedure was followed, with the addition of commercial-grade ammonium chloride to the reactants. For the tri-calcium orthophosphate there may be substituted any material or materials which can produce it under the conditions of the process. The process may be used in addition to any conventional water-purification process.
