Abstract

In a process for producing on ferrous metal parts a sulphurized surface layer, the parts are heated to above 500 DEG C., preferably 560-580 DEG C., in a fused salt bath containing alkali metal cyanide, alkali metal cyanate, active sulphur (i.e. sulphur which shows up on analysis for sulphide), and, where necessary, an inert diluent such as alkali metal chloride or carbonate, the proportion of cyanide (calculated as NaCN) being not less than 3 per cent, the proportions of cyanide and cyanate together (calculated as NaCN + NaCNO) being not less than 10 per cent and the proportion of active sulphur (calculated as S) being in the range 0.1-1.0 per cent, provided that in any case where the proportion of cyanide is 25 per cent or more the active sulphur content does not exceed 0.4 per cent and provided also that the proportions of cyanate and diluent together are such as to bring the fusion point of the bath to a temperature that is 30 DEG C. or more below the operating temperature of the bath. The treatment of specific iron and steel parts is referred to According to the Provisional Specification, the proportion of active sulphur (calculated as Na2S) does not exceed 1 per cent. Specification 640,536 is referred to.
