Abstract
The invention comprises N-alkyl N-sorbityl amides of the formula: <FORM:0771423/IV(b)/1> wherein X is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and R is an alkyl group of 1 to 20, preferably 1 to 18, carbon atoms, and their preparation by reacting an N-alkyl glucamine with a lower alkyl formate or acetate wherein the alkyl group contains from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, preferably at a temperature between 30 DEG C. and the reflux temperature of the reaction mixture. The products are used as surface-active agents and in some cases, e.g. N - methyl - N - sorbitylformamide, as therapeutic substances. Examples describe the reaction of alkyl formates and alkyl acetates with the appropriate N-alkyl glucamines to produce N-alkyl-N-sorbityl formamides and acetamides wherein the alkyl groups are chosen from methyl, butyl, octyl, isodecyl, dodecyl, tert.-tridecyl, tetradecyl, tert.-tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl, eicosyl and tert.-eicosyl groups.
