Abstract
768,477. Making stranded electric conductors' STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 18, 1955; No: 7944/55. Class 87(2). In making a stranded electric conductor, the interstices between the individual conductors 1, Fig. 1, of the strand being filled with a longitudinal barrier 2 of thermoplastic material, the conductors are fed, Fig. 2, through a closing die 3 together with thermoplastic filaments 7 which are to form the barrier, and heat is applied to the filaments, to cause them to soften and fill the interstices. The heat may be applied to the closing die or to the conductors before they enter the die. As shown, use is made of an auxiliary die 5 which determines the angle of approach to the closing die. The filaments may be of polythene or a polythene compound. Additional filaments may be applied to fill the outer interstices of the strand.
