Abstract
763,103. Piston packing. HEPWORTH & GRANDAGE, Ltd. June 30, 1955 [March 30, 1954], No. 9277/54. Class 122 (1). A piston and ring assembly for an internal combustion engine comprises a split packing ring 4 fitted in the top corner of a plain groove 2 in the piston 1, and preferably contracted on to the bottom 5 of the groove, and an L- section piston ring 6 fitted with clearance in the groove around the ring 4, the clearance between the upper portion 7 of the piston ring and the top wall of the groove being greater than the clearance between the lower portion 8 of the piston ring and the packing ring 4. Compressed gases passing behind the piston ring act to urge it into contact with the cylinder wall 3. In a modification, the packing ring 4 is replaced by two split packing rings arranged side-by-side. Specification 636,286 is referred to.
