Abstract
A method of producing pentadecanedioic acid and its alkali metal salts comprises treating an alkyl ester of 15, 16-dihydroxyhexadecanoic acid containing up to four carbon atoms in the alkyl group in acetic acid solution with lead tetraacetate, trilead tetraoxide or sodium bismuthate as oxidizing agent at a temperature of about 20 to about 65 DEG C. to form an aldehyde and heating the aldehyde to not more than 65 DEG C. with an aqueous alkaline solution of hydrogen peroxide and alkali metal hydroxide. The free acid is obtained by decomposition of the alkali metal salt with a strong acid. In examples: pentadecanedioic acid is obtained by oxidizing the methyl ester of 15, 16-dihydroxyhexadecanoic acid in acetic acid with lead tetraacetate, extracting methyl aldehydopentadecanoate from the reaction product, warming the former with hydrogen peroxide and sodium peroxide in water and acidifying the product with hydrochloric, sulphuric or nitric acids (1) and (2); in a similar process red lead is employed instead of lead tetraacetate (3).
