Abstract
746,381. Operating positive clutches. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. June 15, 1954 [June 15, 1953], No. 16472/53. Class 80(2) A clutch for use in an alternator drive comprises a driving member 16 and an axially movable driven member 22 having interengageable means, such as helical teeth 19A, 22A or inclined dog teeth, of the type tending to separate under load, and an axially' slidable sleeve 25, which carries the driven clutch member, splined &c. at 26 to a fixed casing 27 but prevented from moving axially to allow the clutch to disengage by locking means 29, &c. Balls 29, engaging in an annular groove 30 in the sleeve 25 and in holes 31 in the casing 27, are normally prevented from moving radially outwards, to allow the sleeve to slide axially, by a surrounding sleeve 44. Lubricating oil under pressure is supplied to passages 32, 34 and escapes through an electromagnetically controlled valve 40 to return to a casing (not shown); the valve is closed, either automatically or by hand, when the alternator becomes excessively heated &c., and oil under pressure then passes to an annular cylinder 38 containing a piston 43 which is accordingly pushed downwards together with the sleeve 44, against the bias of a spring 45, from the position shown in the left-hand half of the Figure until recesses 46 in the sleeve are opposite to the balls 29. The balls then move radially outwards, the clutch teeth 19A, 22A separate and the sleeve 25 slides upwards to the position shown in the righthand half of the Figure. To re-engage the clutch, the alternator is removed and the driven clutch member 22 moved downwards to its engaged position against the bias of a light spring 48. The balls 29 can then move radially inwards and the piston 43, &c., is restored to its original position, as shown in the left-hand half of the Figure, by the spring 45. A shaft 51 which drives the alternator has a splined connection 52 with the driven clutch member 23 to allow the latter to move axially.
