Abstract

Vinyl hydroquinone may be polymerized, or copolymerized with acrylic or methacrylic acid, maleic anhydride, styrene, p-methyl styrene, 3 : 4-dimethyl styrene, vinyl naphthalene, or butyl acrylate or methacrylate, and vinyl methyl hydroquinone may be copolymerized with styrene in solution in 1 : 4-dioxane, a lower aliphatic hydrocarbon or ether or an aromatic hydrocarbon, using azo-bisisobutyro-nitrile as catalyst. The same polymers may be prepared by deacetylation of the corresponding 2 : 5-diacetoxystyrene polymers which may be prepared in solution in 1 : 4-dioxane or benzene, using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst, deacetylation being effected by treating with methyl alcohol. Polyvinyl gentisal is prepared by reacting polyvinyl alcohol with gentisaldehyde. Polyacrylyl ascorbic acid is prepared by reacting polyacrylic acid anhydride with ascorbic acid in aqueous pyridine. Gentisylaminostyrene-maleic acid interpolymer is prepared by reacting gentisaldehyde and aminostyrene-maleic acid interpolymer and reducing the product. The polyamides from the salt of ethylene diamine and 2 : 5-dihydroxy-p-benzene diacetic acid and from the salt of ethylene glycol bis-(b -aminoethyl) ether and 2,5-dihydroxy-p-benzene diacetic acid are prepared by heating the salts under reduced pressure. The salts are prepared by reacting 2,5-dihydroxy-p-benzene diacetic acid with ethylene diamine or ethylene glycol bis-(b -aminoethyl) ether in alcohol.
