A contact plate for rectifying columns &c. comprises one or more exchange zones bounded by upwardly projecting edges, at least part of the edge having disposed over it a peripheral cap deflecting rising gas from outside the zone into it, the submerged edge of the cap being slotted obliquely to produce a rotary movement of liquid within the zone. Superposed flanged collecting plates 1 receive descending liquid through central tubes 3 and radial gutters 5 near the periphery of a cap ring 2'extending from the column wall and terminating in uniformly oriented slots a which impart a tangential direction to inflowing gas so as to cause liquid on the plate to rotate. For large columns with a number of gas risers and associated' peripheral caps the plate and cap structures may be of the same form each with slots at the outlet of the openings which are interspaced throughout the area of the plate. This may be divided into square or triangular &c. sections. The caps and risers may be formed of identical slotted cylinders fitting into apertures in the plates which may be of pressed or cast material such as ceramics or graphite. A further embodiment comprises a central plate of circular or polygonal form surrounded by an annular member of S-shaped section constituting the peripheral cap and an outermost annular tray section into which a further peripheral cap dips, and from a. pocket formed between this cap and the column wall downcomers lead to the central plate of the next lower tray. One or more additional S-shaped annular elements may be provided.
