Abstract

<PICT:0737453/III/1> In fractional distillation the mixture to be distilled is evaporated in a pre-evaporator by steam or other vapour at a temperature at least about 1 DEG or 2 DEG C. above the boiling temperature of the feed liquid but below the boiling point of the least volatile of the components of the mixture being distilled, and the vapour from the pre-evaporator is taken to an intermediate zone of a rectifying column. The heating steam or vapour for the pre-evaporator may be the steam or vapour leaving the column, after suitable compression. The composition of the vapour taken to the rectifying column may be varied from that of a vapour in equilibrium with the feed liquid to a composition corresponding to that of the feed liquid by varying the proportion of the liquid fed to the evaporator which is evaporated, the remainder being discharged as liquid. As described, a methanolwater mixture is preheated at 5 by the waste heat from the coil 3 at the base of column 1 and at first is partly vaporized in evaporator 13 and partly fed directly to the column by valve 11. The vapours pass to the column at 14 and when the composition of the vapours is the same as that of the feed liquid valve 11 is closed and the feed liquid is totally evaporated in evaporator 13. The overhead vapours are in part removed as product, in part condensed at 8 and the condensate returned by line 9 to the column as reflux, and in part taken off, compressed at 15 and utilized to heat the feed in evaporator 13. The condensate thus formed is returned by pump 18 to the reflux line 9 or may be sent for further treatment or storage.
