735,474. Two-stroke engines; cooling cylinders; filtering charge; supplying liquid fuel. MOTORENFABRIK DARMSTADT GES. Feb. 2, 1953, No. 2947/52. Classes 7(2) and 7(3). [Also in Group XXVIII] A combined engine and multi-stage compressor of V-construction comprises side by side low pressure cylinders 3a, 3b and adjacent high pressure cylinder 3c in line, the inlet manifolds 15 of the cylinders 3a, 3b, and the exhaust manifold 18 of the cylinder 3c being provided on one side of the cylinders, and the exhaust manifolds 16 of the cylinders 3a, 3b and the inlet manifold 17 of the cylinder 3c being provided at the opposite side. The manifolds 16 are con. nected to the manifold 17 through an intercooler 14 disposed in the V-space between the engine cylinders 2 and the compressor cylinders 3, the space being supplied with cooling air by a fan 8 which air also cools the engine and compressor cylinders. The lower part of the V-space forms an engine suction space the ends of which are closed by filters 13. The fuel pump 11 and pressure regulator 10 are mounted on the compressor side of the unit. The engine operates on a two-stroke cycle and operates with crankcase scavenging the bottom ends of the compressor pistons acting as additional scavenge pumps. The crankcase is divided into three separate chambers and the crank shaft is mounted in roller bearings which are sealed at both ends by diaphragms. Quantitatively regulated lubrication is used and oil is returned to the pump by the crank case pressure. The cylinders are of equal diameter.
