Abstract

732,497. Air heaters; hot-water boilers. HOWELL & CO., Ltd. Jan. 7, 1954 [Jan. 17, 1953], No. 1424/53. Classes 64 (1) and 64 (3). A tubular heat-exchanger through which a fluid flows is embedded in the refractory fireback of an open fireplace, and comprises tubes 11 connecting a header 13 near the base of the fireback to a header 15 near the top of the fireback. The headers 13, 15 respectively have a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet. In the air heater shown, only the inner pairs of tubes 11 are connected to the divided header 15. The outer pairs of tubes and the header parts are connected to tubes 16 with outlets behind a grating. The lower ends of the tubes 11 are cut obliquely and extend to different levels in the header 13. The latter has inlet ducts 14 to which additional side tubes 29 may be connected. The tubes 11 are connected together by. integral webs. The refractory back comprises grooved sections 22, 23. In another form, a fan supplies air from outside to a bottom header, which is connected by vertical tubes to a top header. A lateral outlet from the latter leads to a vertical duct with an outlet in an upper room. A hot water boiler embedded in a fireback may comprise vertical tubes connecting top and bottom headers.
