Abstract

Cation-exchange resins containing phosphonic acid groups are made by introducing phosphorus halide groups into a copolymer of an aromatic compound containing one double bond and a cross-linking agent, preferably in bead form, by means of a Friedel-Crafts reaction and hydrolyzing these groups, which are oxidized before, during or after hydrolysis. Preferred copolymers are those of styrene or acenaphthylene or their derivatives and divinyl benzene. They may be treated with phosphorus trichloride in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride, if desired in the presence of ethylene dichloride, simultaneous hydrolysis and oxidation being effected by boiling with sodium hydroxide. Oxcidation may also be effected with chlorine before, or with nitric acid after, hydrolysis. Sulphonic acid groups may also be introduced into the copolymer by treatment with sulphuric acid before or after introduction of the phosphonic acid groups.
