Abstract

724,263. Container closures. ROBINSON, J. Nov. 6, 1952, No. 28029/52. Class 125 (3). [Also in Group XXII] A closure for petrol &c. drums comprises a housing formed by a sleeve B extending outwardly from the container A with a flange 19 overlapping an annular insert C in the housing having an internally threaded base portion 11 and an upper non-threaded anchor portion 12, the flange 19 and anchor portion 12 being interlocked by pressing the flange into tight contact with the internal surface of the anchor portion and bodily flowing both these parts outwardly to form a tapered seating for a gasket E on a plug D. The flowing carries the edge 17 of the housing out of the path of the threads 18 on the plug D. A seal cap F of light material is crimped over the shoulder 24. The insert ring C may be die cast or cut from a screwed tube, or the thread may be rolled or machined on a flat bar which is afterwards formed into a ring. The flange 12 can be knurled to anchor the ring. The edge 17 of the housing may be bevelled or fit into a seat formed on the ring. Lugs may be cast on or broached outwardly from the lower part of the ring into grooves or indentations formed in the base of the housing or the enfolding edge of the housing may be indented to positively lock the ring against rotation.
