Abstract

722,464. Abrasive blasting. MEAD, W. H. Aug. 11, 1952, No. 20178/52. Class 60 A nozzle for air blasting with solid abrasive particles has an inlet section A, middle section B and outlet section C. The inlet section A has an extended S-shape longitudinal contour 15; the inside wall 14 of the feed conduit 10 is tangential to the contact at the inlet end of this section, so that abrasive passes from the conduit to the section without disturbance. The air stream is stated to accelerate smoothly in this section to a sub-sonic speed. The middle section B has a straight contour 16 and is preferably of constant bore; the contour at the inlet end of this section is tangential to the contour 15 at the outlet end of the section A. The air stream is stated to reach sonic speed in the section B. The outlet section C has an extended S-shaped longitudinal contour 19; the contour at the outlet end of the middle section B is tangential to the contour at the inlet end of section C. The contour at the outlet end of section C is substantially straight but of smaller crosssectional area than the inlet end of the nozzle. The air stream is stated to accelerate to supersonic speed in section C, the pressure falling to substantially atmospheric pressure at the outlet end, so avoiding a shock wave. A lining or coating 21 of hard, wear-resisting metal is provided. The bore at the inlet end of section A may be ¥ inch, that of the outlet end of section A, throughout section B, and of the inlet end of section C <SP>5</SP>/ 16 inch, and at the outlet end of section 0.4 inch; the lengths of sections A, B C may be 2¢ inches, ¥ inch and 2“ inches respectively.
