Abstract
722,314. Continuous-casting machines. GERBER, J. S. Nov. 26, 1951 [Nov. 30, 1950], No. 29360/50. Class 83 (1). In the continuous casting of bars, vibrations are applied to the cast bar being withdrawn from the lower end of the mould either at the point of application of the withdrawing means or at a point between said means and the mould. A bar 4 is withdrawn intermittently from a mould 3 by pinch rolls 5 mounted in a housing 7 supported by springs 9 and vibrated vertically by vibrator units 10. If the vibrators are electrically operated, they are preferably coupled to a control unit 14 so that they are operated only when the rolls 5 are not being driven and are held by brakes 12 so that the vibrations will not be absorbed by the backlash in the roll driving mechanism. Alternatively mechanical or pneumatically-operated vibrators may be used. Horizontal vibrations could be applied to the bar by a mechanical hammer 15 between the mould and the rolls.
