Abstract
716,178. Agglutinated fibrous sheet materials. FREUDENBERG KOMM.-GES. AUF AKTIEN, C. July 13. 1950 [Oct. 1, 1948; Oct. 1, 1948: Oct. 1, 1948; Oct. 1, 1948], No. 17597/50 Class 140 A flexible, fabric-like material Is made by pretreating one surface of a fleece of randomlyarranged fibres with a small quantity of an agglutinant to stick surface fibres together without appreciably reducing porosity, pressing a viscous, foamed, aqueous binding agent into the other surface, and drying without pressure. The fleece may be passed between hot pressure rollers after leaving the carding machine, and, after the pretreatment, may be impregnated with the foamed adhesive while passing through the nip of a pair of rollers. The fibres may be cotton bast, jute, wool, hair, wool comber waste, shoddy, rayon staple fibres, nylon, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, casein, glass wool or slag wool. Mixtures may be used, which may include elastic fibres. The agglutinant for pretreating the fleece may be a froth of rubber or synthetic. resin. The binding agent may be an aqueous emulsion of rubber or synthetic rubber, a polyvinyl or polyacrylic compound, or ethylene-vinylidene chloride copolymer. Vulcanizing agents, accelerators, antiagers, thickening agents such as flour or fish glue, and fillers such as clay may be added. The composition may vulcanize on storage, or on 'heating after the drying step. A specified emulsion contains butadiene-styrene copolymer, glue aminoethane sulphonic acid sodium salt, sulphur, zinc oxide, zinc salt of diethyl dithiocarbamic acid, and phenylbetanaphthyliamine. The dried impregnated fleece may be calendered, treated with a water-repellent substance such as a wax or paraffin emulsion which may contain aluminium acetate or formate, crease-proofed, e.g. by treatment with urea - formaldehyde or urea - dicyandiamideformaldehyde resin, or softened, e.g. with a compound of diethanolamine monostearate and ethylene oxide. Products made from cotton or ramie fibres may be treated with caustic soda, and products containing wool fibres may be decatized. The product may also be improved by treatment with an organic liquid which has no effect on the impregnant more than a slight swelling. Specified liquids are trichlurethylene, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, benzine, acetone, ethyl or methyl alcohol. The liquid may be applied in vapour form. The products may be made abrasion-resistant by applying straight or ornamental rows of stitching. e.g. using cotton, artificial silk. nylon, or perlon threads. The products may be used for stiffening launderable fabrics, e.g. collars, cuffs, or clothing giving protection against cold or dust.
