Abstract

Esters of the formula <FORM:0712431/IV (b)/1> where X is a straight-chain alkyl radicle containing at least 12 carbon atoms, one Y is an alkyl radicle containing not more than 3 carbon atoms in a straight chain, and the other Y is hydrogen, are employed in corrosion-preventive compositions (see Group III). In the preparation of such esters, olefins are reacted with maleic anhydride to form alkenyl succinic acid anhydrides, which are then hydrogenated to convert them to the corresponding alkyl succinic acid anhydrides, which are esterified with stoichiometric quantities of the desired alcohols. Esters mentioned are the mono-(methyl, ethyl) n-propyl, iso-propyl, sec.-butyl and tert.-butyl, esters of n-octadecyl succinic acid and the monopropyl ester of n-tetradecyl succinic acid. In comparative tests the mono-n-butyl and mono-n-amyl esters of n-octadecyl succinic acid are also mentioned. U.S.A. Specifications 2,055,456 and 2,411,215 are referred to.ALSO:Corrosion of ferrous metal surfaces is prevented by applying to the surfaces a solution in an organic medium of an ester of the formula <PICT:0712431/III/1> in which X is a straight chain alkyl radicle, containing at least 12 carbon atoms, one Y is an alkyl radicle containing not more than 3 carbon atoms in a straight chain, and the other Y is hydrocarbon. The organic medium may be a lubricating oil, for example mineral lubricating oil, polyoxyalkylene glycols, polyethylene, and esters formed by reacting branched chain aliphatic alcohols with straight chain dibasic acids such as sebasic and adipic acids, particularly di-(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate. Other organic media are carbon tetrachloride, benzene, kerosene, naphtha, and mixtures of alcohols and benzene. The lubricating oil solutions may be employed as lubricants, slushing oils, cutting oils and coolants for metal fabricating. The esters may also be added to transformer oils, hydraulic fluids, torque converter fluids, heat transfer fluids, anti-freeze fluids, flushing oils, gasoline, fuel oils and other liquid petroleum hydrocarbons. Esters mentioned are the mono-(methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, sec-butyl, and tert.-butyl) esters of n-octadecyl succinic acid and the monopropyl ester of n-tetradecyl succinic acid. The ester solutions may contain additional ingredients such as oxidation inhibitors, particularly di-tert.-butyl-p-cresol, phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine and phenothiazine. Oil solutions of the esters may contain such additions as pour point depressants and extreme pressure additives. For comparison purposes, mineral oil compositions containing n or iso-octadecyl succinic acid, iso-octadecenyl succinic acid, or the mono-n-butyl or mono-n-amyl ester of n-octadecyl succinic acid, with or without di-tert.-butyl-p-cresol, are described.
