Abstract

Gas is delivered in a dispersed state into a liquid through a porous element which is made of material normaly wettable by the liquid, but which has been subjected to treatment so as to coat the surface of the material in the pores with a substance, e.g. a silicone or wax, which renders the surface non-wettable by the liquid. The porous element may be, for example, ceramic, porous carbon, sintered glass or sintered metal. The Specification refers to applications wherein gas is introduced in a dispersed state into liquids to effect agitation or to promote chemical reactions; and also to aeration of liquor in which organisms such as bacteria or yeast cells are growing.ALSO:Gas is delivered in a dispersed state into a liquid through a porous element which is made of material normally wettable by the liquid, but which has been subjected to treatment so as to coat the surface of the material in the pores with a substance, e.g. a silicone or wax, which renders the surface non-wettable by the liquid.
