Abstract

In the pearl polymerization of one or more unsaturated organic compounds containing a CH2 = C< group, e.g. styrene, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, and styrene with acrylonitrile, in suspension in an aqueous medium, finely divided titanium dioxide is used as a stabilizing agent, e.g. in amount of 0.1 to 1 per cent. of the system. The process may be carried out under increased pressure, using a catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide. A salt, e.g. sodium chloride, may be added to the aqueous medium to aid the formation of the monomer suspension. White pigmented pearls are formed and further white or other pigments and dyes may be added if desired.
