708,413. Ultrasonic testing devices. KRAUTKRAMER, J., and KRAUTKRAMER, H. July 30, 1952 [Nov. 8, 1951], No. 19291/52. Class 118 (2). In an ultrasonic pulse-echo system for determining the thickness of sheet material the recurrence frequency of the multiple echoes caused by multiple reflection of a transmitted pulse between the two surfaces of the sheet is measured, the transmitter pulse recurrence frequency being low enough to ensure that the echoes of one pulse die away before the next pulse is transmitted. The echo recurrence frequency is measured by. applying the demodulated echo wave pulses to a circuit which is tuned to resonate therewith, the resonance condition being indicated by applying the output from the circuit to a cathode-ray tube on to a rectifier and voltmeter. For thick sheets, the measurement may be made on one harmonic of the echo frequency and checked by testing on another harmonic. The demodulator and turnable circuit may comprise a single unit which can be plugged into a conventional type testing device.
