705,447. Liquid or pulverized fuel combustion apparatus. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. Dec. 14, 1951 [Dec. 15, 1950], No. 29326/51. Class 51 (1) Apparatus for burning liquid or pulverized solid fuel comprises an elongated combustion chamber 1 constructed in the form of a solid of revolution, an atomizer or injector 6 for the fuel fitted centrally at one end of the chamber and surrounded by an air supply conduit 7 which leads into the chamber and is provided with means for causing rotation of the air flowing therethrough, a further air supply passage in the form of an annular slit 10 which debouches into the chamber at or near the same end but at the circumference thereof, and means for supplying to this slit air having a rotary motion in the same rotational sense as the air supplied to the atomizer or injector. The air flowing through the conduit 7 is rotated by helically placed guide vanes 8 whilst the air emerging into the chamber from the slit 10 is given its rotational whirl by being blown tangentially via conduit 12 into the annular chamber 11 which supplies the slit. The burner flame is stabilized by a small part of the air entering, through the conduit 7 being directed by an annular partition 9, surrounding the atomizer, on to the flame. The combustion products leave the apparatus at 5 whilst ignition of the fuel is effected through an opening 14 and the flame viewed through an inspection hole 15. The air resistance offered by conduits 7 and 12 is preferably such that equal quantities of air are delivered by the conduits to the chamber 1-it is undesirable that one of these quantities should be more than double the other. It is desirable for the length of the chamber 1 to have a ratio of not less than 2:1 to the diameter. The annular chamber 11 may be provided with a plurality of tangentially arranged supply conduits similar to 12.
