Class 100 (2) A combined rotary printing and serial numbering device comprises a printing cylinder 10, a drive 33 connected with the cylinder, consecutive numeral type wheels 15 carried by the cylinder and including tens transfer means to effect transfer from a type wheel of lower to a type wheel of next higher order, intermittent gearing including a driven gear 25 continuously moving with and relative to the cylinder during each printing cycle, and a gear 22 connecting the latter gear with the type wheel of lowest order, the intermittent gearing being driven and constructed so that rotation of the type wheel of lowest order is continuous during that portion of the printing cycle required for the type wheels to pass from a printing to an inking position. Cylinder 10 has a printing die 10a and projecting pintles 11 supported in bearings 12. The serial number assembly 14 comprises a plurality of numeral type wheels 15 freely mounted on a shaft 16 supported in bearings 17 in the end walls of cylinder 10. Each higher type wheel has a gear 18'fixed to one side which meshes with an associated Geneva pinion 19, the latter being freely mounted on a shaft 21 and advanced one tooth by a wheel of lower order in known manner when the wheel moves from "9" to " 10 ". A Geneva gear member 22 fixed to the units wheel 15 has ten radial slots 23 and ten concave peripheral portions 24 and is driven by the intermittent drive gear member 25 having four equally spaced pins 26 arranged so that one pin will engage a slot 23 during each 90 degrees rotation. A hub portion 27 of gear 25 has curved peripheral portions 28 which engage portions 24 during dwell periods. Gear 25 is fixed to a shaft 29 mounted on a bearing 31 at one end of cylinder 10 coaxial with the axis of the cylinder. A co-operating platen roller 32 is mounted on the power driven shaft 33, which also drives the cylinder and serial number wheels by means of gears 34, 36 respectively engaging gears 35, 37. Gear 25 rotates 270 degrees while cylinder 10 rotates 360 degrees the 90 degrees lag providing the timing to produce the desired intermittent drive of gear 22. By means of gears 22, 25 the drive of wheels 15 takes place between the printing and inking positions, and a dwell of the wheels is effected between inking and printing. Inking is effected by means of a roller 38.
