Abstract

702.235. Opening boxes by tearing. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. July 29, 1952 [Sept. 13, 1951], No. 21506/51. Class 66 A rectangular carton of the kind formed from a blank of stiff paper or cardboard as in Specification 675,522 has the lines of folding of the top endforming flaps perforated or otherwise weakened along at least a portion of their length extending from the edge of the carton containing the lateral tab for opening. A blank 11 (Fig. 1) comprises side panels 12, 13 joined by a bottom panel 14 and having side flaps 18, 19, and top end flaps 16, 17. A tab 24 to facilitate opening extends laterally from the top end flap 17 and perforations 26 are provided along part of the fold lines of flaps 16 and 17. Score lines 27 on the end flaps 16, 17 define with the perforations 26 an opening panel 25 (Fig. 3). The tab 24, initially held against the side 18 as in Fig. 2 (not shown), by a small spot of adhesive, is lifted to tear open the panel 25 and the carton may be subsequently closed by inserting the tab 24 in the pocket 29 formed between side flaps 18 and 19 by leaving their top portions free from adhesive.
