Abstract
689,545. Welding by fusion. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Aug. 20, 1951 [Aug. 24, 1950], No. 19586/51. Class 83 (iv). In an apparatus for clamping sheet metal parts edge to edge during electric fusion welding thereof, comprising a pair of opposed clamping members of which one has a groove for the reception of an electrode, the other member comprises a block of elastomer upon which is supported at least two laminations of highly heat-conductive metal. In one embodiment, two steel plates 10, 10 to be butt welded are held between an upper clamp 11, Fig. 1, having a groove 12 for an electrode, and laminations 16 of copper &c. supported by a sheet 15 of asbestos &c. on a block 14 of elastomer, e.g. of natural rubber. The block 14 is held in a lower clamp 13 which is movable to allow the positioning of the plates 10, 10. In a modification the block 14 is hollow and is supplied with hydraulic fluid so that its movement may replace all or part of that of the clamp 13. Coolant may be passed through the hollow block. In a further embodiment the block 14 is provided with metallic cooling conduits near its upper surface to replace the asbestos &c. sheet. In a modification two laminations 18, 19, Fig. 4, are welded together at their edges to form a hollow member for cooling water. The welding of aluminium, magnesium and mild steel by argon or helium-studded arc welding employing a tungsten electrode and a filler wire is referred to.
