Abstract
<PICT:0688525/III/1> Chlorine gas is passed into liquid yellow phosphorus and the phosphorus trichloride formed is removed as a vapour and liquified. In a continuous process chlorine is introduced through an inlet 6 into a current of liquid phosphorus circulating in a closed circuit under the the influence of the current of gas and thermosiphon action of the reaction heat. Phosphorus is introduced through inlet 5 and phosphorus trichloride vapour escapes through outlet 7. Normal atmospheric pressures are generally employed but the vapour may be led off under reduced pressure or with the aid of an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen. Cooling to prevent conversion to red phosphorus may be effected by the liquid phosphorus passing into the reaction vessel and also by introducing liquid phosphorus trichloride into the liquid phosphorus in the reaction vessel.
