Abstract

Solid or hollow tubular winding supports for surgical bandages, having a passageway or passageways on their exterior or interior surface or through their thickness or in combinations of these positions, are made from synthetic resins and cellulose derivatives. The Specification contains many examples of such supports, e.g. tubes having circular holes or elongated slots, a solid rod with an exterior twisted helical groove, and a rod of cruciform cross-section. The support may be made from polyvinyl chloride plasticized with tricresyl phosphate, cellulose nitrate containing a little camphor, or phenol-formaldehyde resin and may contain a compound having germicidal properties, e.g. parachlor-metaxylenol.ALSO:A plaster of Paris or other medical or surgical bandage to be immersed in water or other liquid before use, consists of the bandage wound on a solid or hollow cylindrical support made of metal or a plastic material (see Group IV (a)) having a passageway or passageways for liquid on its exterior or interior surface or through its thickness or in any combination of these positions to lead the liquid to the inner windings of the bandage. The support may be in the form of a tube containing circular holes or elongated slots or a solid rod with an exterior twisted helical groove or a rod of cruciform cross-section. The support may contain a compound having germicidal and/or bactericidal properties.
