Abstract
685,121. Stator winding machines. HOOVER (ELECTRIC MOTORS), Ltd., and WICKHAM, A. H. July 5, 1950 [July 25, 1949], No. 19515/49. Class,35. In a stator winding machine in which the stator is moved angularly to enable a needle reciprocating through its bore to lay wires in different slots for each direction of its travel., stationary guiding members are provided near each end of the path of the needle for holding the wire toward the bottom of the slots. As shown in Fig. 5, the stator holder B<SP>2</SP> is adjustably secured to the annular pinion B<SP>1</SP> supported on rollers D<SP>1</SP> the pinion B<SP>1</SP> being turned by a toothed rack reciprocated through a variable ratio lever from the follower of a high-speed cam M (Fig. 3). The amplitude of the rack is variable by a slow speed cam drum, the effective surfaces of which are strips the extent and spacing of which depend on the numbers of turns to be wound and the slot spacings of the several coils of a winding, the low-speed cam being linked through pawl-and-ratchet gearing with the high-speed cam. Above and below the stator holder are guide cylinders J fitting over the needle head guides G and having slots J<SP>3</SP> through which the needles C can pass near the ends of their outer strokes, the open ends of the slots J<SP>3</SP> being curved to cause the wire from the needle to ride round the cylinder surface in an arcuate path. The needles C are side-by-side in needle head H mounted on guide-bars G which have cam slots G<SP>1</SP> to receive rollers C<SP>2</SP> carried on the needles so that as the head is moved up the bars G the needle tip is first withdrawn radially as it passes through the stator and is then reprojected after traversing the stator, a similar movement occurring as the needle head travels downwards. Pulleys H<SP>1</SP> on the needle head guide wire to the apertures through the needles. The head is reciprocated by a connecting-rod K<SP>3</SP> coupled to the main shaft of the machine. Before winding commences, a pin X is placed in a slot near the centre of the coil to be first wound, the said slot being one to be wound at a later stage, the pin occupying the half of the slot to be wound last in the case of a doublelayer winding. These pins, of which there is one per hole, assist in the location of the end portions. The two slots nearest the pin are first wound, after lowering the upper guide cylinder over the pin extensions (Fig. 5) then the next two until the windings for a pair of poles has been completed whereupon the machine is automatically stopped. The operator then rotates the stator holder (throngh 90 degrees in the case of a four-pole stator), resets the slow-speed cam drum and starts the machine in the opposite direction. A similar procedure is adopted for the starting winding which occupies the other halves of the slots. Specification 685,199 is referred to.
