Abstract
A 2-alkenyl halide is separated from a contaminant 1-alkenyl halide by distillation in presence of an aliphatic saturated ketone having a boiling-point lower than or not substantially exceeding those of the alkenyl halides whereby a low boiling azeotrope containing the 1-alkenyl halide and the ketone is formed. Many alkenyl chlorides, bromides and iodides are specified and they may be obtained by halogenation of an olefin or dehydrohalogenation of a dihalo aliphatic hydrocarbon. Many ketones are also specified. The 1-alkenyl halide and ketone may be separated by solvent extraction, extractive distillation, e.g. in presence of water or selective adsorption and the ketone may be recycled to the distillation zone. In examples: 2-methallyl chloride contaminated with isocrotyl chloride is subjected to distillation in presence of acetone.ALSO:A 2-alkenyl halide is separated from a 1-alkenyl halide by distillation in presence of an aliphatic saturated ketone having a boiling point lower than or not substantially exceeding those of the alkenyl halides whereby a low boiling azeotrope containing the 1-alkenyl halide and the ketone is formed.
