Abstract

682,376. Discharge apparatus. KREFFT, H. E. April 24, 1951 [Jan. 25, 1951], No. 9559/51. Class 39(i) [Also in Group XXXVI] A lead in seal for an electric discharge device comprises an electric conductor consisting of an inner lead 18 and an outer lead 4 connected by a thin foil 5 which is sealed in a quartz glass body 1 having a tubular plug 2 fused to one end so that the inner lead 18 is located axially of and spaced from the inner wall of the plug 2. The leads 4, 18, which are of sheet metal are connected to the foil 5 by tongues 9, 16 which pass through slots in the foil, and by folding the margins 8, 15 of the leads over the foil, the parts then being secured by spot welding. That part of the inner lead 18 that is not secured to the foil 5 may be bent to tubular shape to receive a support rod for an electrode. The foil 5 may have stiffening ribs, and the sealing edges 13 may be wedge shaped and bent out of the plane of the foil. The vitreous jacket is made from two quartz glass tubes of different diameters joined end to end. The assembled conductor is introduced into the larger tube so that the tubular conductor 18 lies in the smaller tube, through which an inert gas is then passed. The larger tube is heated and pressed on to the foil 5 and the resulting seal is severed from the remainder of the tube. The smaller tube is also cut, leaving the plug 2 for sealing to a vitreous envelope. Quartz 3 remaining on the outer lead 4 is removed to form the completed seal. The lead in conductor may be made of molybdenum, tungsten or tantalum.
