Abstract

676,015. Balancing engines. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. June 29, 1949 [April 16, 1949], No. 17174/49. Class 122(iii) Balancing means for an engine having secondary force and secondary moment unbalance comprises two pairs of balance weights mounted for rotation at twice engine speed about axes parallel to the crankshaft, the first pair of weights being in phase and rotating in the same direction as the crankshaft and the second pair of weights rotating in the opposite direction to the crankshaft and being in opposite phase and at right-angles to the first pair. In a V-8 engine having the crankpins 12 all in one plane and the cylinders in one bank offset with relation to the cylinders in the other bank so that two connecting rods, one associated with a piston in each bank, are connected to a single crankpin, the secondary out-of-balance forces are balanced by a pair of weights 16, one at each end of the crankshaft 13, carried on a piston 17 driven from the crankshaft through a pinion 19 and an idler wheel 18 in the same direction as and at twice the speed of the crankshaft which rotates at twice crankshaft speed and in the opposite direction thereto.
