Abstract

670,891. Motor vehicle frames. BUDD CO. Dec. 6, 1949 [May 10, 1949], No. 31246/49. Class 79(iv) [Also in Group XXXII] In a motor vehicle having longitudinal body sill members and a transverse box sectional beam supporting the engine and a pair of road wheels, the beam is secured towards each end to one sill member by a longitudinal bolt passing through two brackets depending from the sill member, one in front of and one behind the beam, and a sleeve extending through and secured to the upright walls of the beam, vibration-absorbing material being interposed between the bolt and the sleeve. As shown applied to a self-supporting motor vehicle body the box-sectioned longitudinal members 10 are resiliently connected to the transverse beam 15 to which a pair of independently sprung steerable wheels 16 and the front end of the engine are attached, the top of the suspension springs abutting housings 17 in the beam. At the points of intersection with the beam the members 10 have their bottom walls upwardly off-set at 19 and reinforced thereat by plates 20. The brackets 21 are arranged fore and aft of each intersection and each bracket comprises a U-shaped portion 22 secured by rivets 23 to the member 10 and a reinforced portion 24. The bolt 26 passes through the portions 24 and within the sleeve 27 secured to the upright walls of the beam 15 with the interpositioning of bushings 29 of rubber or other vibration absorbing material.
