663,314. Jettisonable fuel tanks. GOODYEAR AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. May 3, 1949. [Feb. 24, 1949] No. 11794/49. Class 9 (ii). [Also in Groups XXIX and XXXIII] A jettisonable fuel tank for aircraft is supported in a substantially rigid enclosure comprising a fixed portion for sustaining transverse forces and a removable portion for supporting the weight of the tank. As shown a flexible fuel tank 3 for a combat aircraft (see Group XXIX) is housed in a container 1 supported in a bomb bay by means of cables 46 engaging loops 44, and provided with a trough-shaped releasable base member 2 on which the tank rests. The container is of bulletproof construction, the side and end walls 8, 9 consisting of resinimpregnated nylon fabric, and the top wall 10 of glass fibre cloth, with aluminium-alloy stiffeners 24, 27. Wooden strips 55 prevent lateral bulging of the side walls. For ease of installation the container is made in two portions connected by piano hinges 7. The base member 2 is also made of resin-impregnated nylon fabric and is retained in position by arms 63, each carrying a pair of conventional electromagnetic release shackles 64 which are operated to jettison the member 2 and the tank 3. In the case of a non-combat aircraft the container 1 may be made of aluminium alloy. Specification 658,904, [Group XXIX] is referred.
