Abstract
658,802. Winches. TUFNOL, Ltd. Dec. 29, 1948, No. 33452. [Class 78 (v)] [Also in Group XXIV] A ratchet-controlled hand-operated winch consists of a base a fixed to a support, with a. cylindrical post b on which is formed a ratchet-wheel c. The winch barrel comprises a main cylindrical part d rotatably mounted on the post b, end flanges e and cover pieces f. Within the barrel d and parallel to its axis are four longitudinal bores each carrying a spindle g supported at its extremities by the cover-pieces f; on each spindle is a pawl h and rocker i, the pawls and rockets being accommodated in recesses in the flanges e. A member angularly movable by the knob k through a distance determined by the stop l is mounted in the flange associated with the rockers, and carries four rocker actuators in the form of radiallyextending plungers o loaded by springs p adapted to bear at their outer ends on the flat edges of the rockers. Spokes m extending radially from the hand wheel n are attached to the same flange. To reduce the range of lostmotion between the hand wheel and ratchet four pawls are provided and either the spacing of the spindles g or the number of teeth on the ratchet-wheel c are made such that the pawls can engage in succession. To operate the ratchet the plungers o occupy the position shown in Fig. 2 and to disengage them the knob k is rotated so that the lines of action of the plungers moves to the opposite side of the axis of the spindles g.
