Abstract

Acid, neutral or basic solutions of aluminium chloride are produced from granular alumino-siliceous materials by repeated percolation therethrough, whilst in gas-tight vessel or vessels, of hot solutions of hydrochloric acid and/or aluminium chloride, removing the solutions at the desired end point, washing the residue in situ by percolating therethrough a plurality of liquors of progressively weaker solutions from previous extractions and finally water, and then discharging the residue. The HCl and steam evolved during reaction are condensed and such condensate may be used as washing liquor for the residue or as a digesting liquor. If desired, strong HCl solution or gas may be added to a dilute condensate, wash liquor is partially neutralized digesting liquor, to give further digesting liquors. The digestion may be under increased pressure, temperature or concentration. The basicity of the aluminium chloride solution may be increased by adding aluminium metal to the liquor in the reactor. Neutral or basic solutions of aluminium, potassium and iron may also be obtained when the starting materials contain the said metals by digesting them as above, and basic insoluble salts will not be formed provided the digesting solutions are free from sulphuric acid and sulphates. Specifications 247,078, 278,370, [both in Class 1 (iii)], and 404,991 are referred to.
