Abstract
651,436. Aircraft wings. BLACKBURN & GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., [formerly BLACKBURN AIRCRAFT, Ltd.]. June 4, 1948, No. 15168. [Class 4] The wings 1 of an aircraft are disposed substantially normal to the longitudinal axis during take-off and landing, and are rotated about pivots 2 at the roots into a swept-back position in which they co-operate with the tail-planes 4 to form a wing of delta shape for high-speed flight. The wings carry landing flaps 7 which nest within root fairings 5 in the swept-back position, and ailerons 6 which are preferably of the split type, in order that they may enclose the leading edges of the tailplanes when retracted. Controllers 8, pivotally mounted on axes parallel to the wing leading edges, provide lateral control when the wings are in the highspeed position. The pivots 2 are preferably so arranged that the wings 1 assume a predetermined dihedral and/or incidence when moved forward to the low-speed position. In order to maintain longitudinal stability when the wings are moved, fuel or ballast is transferred between tanks 13, 14, 16, 17 disposed at the forward and rear ends of the fuselage. An additional tank 15 is situated at the position of the centre of gravity during high-speed flight, during which period fuel is drawn only from that tank. As an alternative to fuel transfer part of it may be jettisoned or, according to the Provisional Specification, a sliding weight may be fitted in the fuselage, linked to the wings so as to be movable therewith.
