Abstract
643,736. Ammunition projectiles. SAGEB, SOC. ANON DE GESTION ET D'EXPLOITATION DE BREVETS. Aug. 12, 1947, No. 22355. Convention date, Oct. 3, 1941. [Class 9 (i)] A projectile has a body 10 containing an explosive charge 11 having a conical re-entrant cavity into which extends a hood 25 preferably of mild carbon steel and having a flange engaged between the body 10 and a member intermediate between the body 10 and a hollow ballistic nose 36. Into a screw-threaded plug 13 closing the base of the projectile is screwed a base fuze 15 containing within a housing 16 an inertia body 17 held by a spring 18 and pivotally supporting a centrifugallyactuated safety firing pin assembly 19 carrying the firing pin F. The forward part 20 of the fuze housing contains a primer P and a booster charge 21 held in place by a detent plate 22. At the forward end of the body 10, abutting against a shoulder 30 is screwed in the intermediate member 35 having a radial flange 37 against which rests the ballistic cap 36 of steel, 7 to 10 mm. thick for a 75 mm. calibre projectile. To fit the cap, which is welded in position, the intermediate member is tapered externally and is tapered internally to guide the collapsing hood after impact of the projectile with the target. The internal wall 40 of the intermediate member is chamfered rearwardly to form a surface 41 inclined at 45 degrees to the axis of the projectile. A radial flange 45 on the hood 25 is held between the member 35 and the shoulder 30. For a projectile having a muzzle velocity of 800-1,000 f.s. the length of the front portion, i.e. the cap and intermediate member combined, is about 2 calibres and the wall 40 is one-third to threequarters of the length of the hood. The intermediate member is one-third of the length of the front section. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also modifications of the attachment of the ballistic cap to the body of the projectile. It also describes a hood which varies in thickness from apex to base. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
