[Class 143] [Also in Group XXXV] A weight controlled measuring device of the kind in which the volume of an adjustable capacity vessel, intermittently delivering material to a packaging machine, is varied by the variation in weight of selected filled packets from a predetermined standard, is characterized in that a timing means ensures that a time lag will occur between depositing the packet on the scale and the operative connection of the scale and the volume adjusting mechanism, and that a second timing means controlled by the degree of movement of the scale from a predetermined setting causes the adjusting mechanism to operate for varying times. The volume of a measuring chamber, constituted by the space enclosed by tubular members 12, 13, Fig. 1, may be varied by movement of the member 12, which is rigid with a hopper 1, by rotation of a motor driven nut 4 co-operating with a threaded member 3 secured to said hopper. The motor 9, Fig. 2, is rotated in either direction for a time, controlled by a timer 50, after contact has been made between any one of a series of segments 30, 31 on a commutator 32 and a movable finger 29 carried by a scale 27 on to which scale selected cartons 18 are pushed by a member 22, the time and direction of rotation of the motor 9 depending upon which segment is contacted by the finger 29. The commutator 32 is swung into a position where it may be contacted by the finger 29, after the finger has had time to settle, by the attraction of an armature 35 towards a solenoid 36 which is energised through a delayed action timer 37 when a switch 38 is closed by the pushing member 22. To prevent spilling the spout 17 is arranged to extend well into the package 18 and it is removed therefrom at the completion of each filling operation by a member 20 which is driven in timed relationship with other parts of the apparatus.
