Abstract
Glass, porcelain, wood and asbestos are rendered water-repellent by coating with an aqueous composition comprising a siliconate obtained by dissolving the hydrolysis product of an alkyl or aryl trihalogensilane in a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide and drying. The composition may contain in addition a solution of a diorganosilanediol in an alkali hydroxide. The metals of the alkali hydroxides may be sodium, potassium, barium, calcium, strontium. Salts of iron, lead, zinc, silver and copper may also be included in the composition. The composition may be applied by dipping or spraying. The drying is preferably effected under acid conditions such as in the presence of carbon dioxide. Specification 572,740, [Group VIII], is referred to.ALSO:Aqueous compositions comprising a siliconate obtained by dissolving the hydrolysis product of an alkyl or aryl trihalogensilane in a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide are used to render bodies water-repellent by coating or impregnating. The composition may contain in addition a solution of a diorganosilanediol in an alkali hydroxide. The metals of the alkali hydroxides may be sodium, potassium, barium, calcium, strontium. Salts of iron, lead, zinc, silver, copper may also be included in the compositions. The diorganosilanediol may be prepared by treating a diorganosilicon halide or a dialkyl, diaryl or alkylaryl silicone with an alkali hydroxide. Textiles such as cotton poplin cloth treated with such compositions and dried are stiffer than the untreated cloth. Specification 572,740 [Group VIII], is referred to.ALSO:Textiles such as cotton cloth are stiffened by impregnating them with an aqueous composition comprising a siliconate obtained by dissolving the hydrolysis product of an alkyl or aryl trihalogensilane in a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide. The compositions may also contain a di-organosilanediol. Sodium, potassium, barium, calcium, or strontium hydroxide may be used. Salts of iron, lead, zinc, silver, copper, may be included in the compositions. Specification 572,740, [Group VIII], is referred to.
