Abstract
In the polymerization of polymerizable substances in aqueous emulsion, fresh quantities of monomer, at a concentration higher than the monomer concentration in the emulsion, are added such that the monomer concentration is kept below that equivalent to the maximum concentration of polymer at which deposition just does not occur and above half of this concentration. The polymerization may be carried out by the batch or continuous method and is stopped before the polymer concentration reaches the deposition value. At the beginning of the polymerization the monomer concentration may be below the lower limit provided this is exceeded at the end of the induction period. The process is applicable to the copolymerization of two or more polymerizable substances provided all components are added to the system as monomers. Specified substances which may be polymerized by the process are vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, styrene, acrylic and methacrylic acid esters, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride, maleic acid esters, isobutene and butadiene. In examples, vinyl chloride is polymerized in aqueous emulsion in the presence of cetyl sulphate, hydrogen peroxide and sulphuric acid. Specification 578,584 is referred to.
