Abstract
"Ultra-short fibre" nitrocellulose, viz: having a fibre length between 30 mm. and 250 mm. and preferably between 50 mm. and 150 mm., is preferably prepared by subjecting nitrocellulose to viscosity reduction treatments to bring its viscosity (measured in a concentration of 40 gm. in 100 cc. of aqueous acetone S.G. 0.8097 at 20 DEG C.) between 0.3 and 0.5 c.g.s. units at 20 DEG C. The fibre may be prepared (a) by directly kiering a fibrous nitrocellulose under pressure, and washing the product or (b) by treating nitrocellulose with boiling aqueous ammonia at ordinary pressure with subsequent bleaching at raised temperature and stabilization by water boiling. A stabilizer, e.g. calcium carbonate, may be incorporated in the fibre.
