587,798. Gravity separation apparatus. BRITISH TANKER CO., Ltd., and McKINNON, J. V. Nov. 23, 1944, No. 23296. [Class 46] Apparatus for separating liquids of different specific gravities, for example, water from liquid fuel, or for removing solid material from liquid comprises two casings e, Fig. 1, of uniform cross-section for substantially the whole of their length, the casings having at the bottom a common sump c while at the top one casing has an inlet pipe a for liquid and the other an outlet pipe b. The cross-section of the inlet and outlet pipes is small in comparison with the cross-section of the casings, so that the flow of the liquid is quiescent, facilitating the settlement of the heavier liquid or solid material in the sump c. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the casing g provided with an inlet pipe a is mounted co-axially within the casing f which has an outlet pipe b.
