Abstract

580,497. Photographic developing processes. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co., Yackel, E. C., Leermakers, J. A., and Staud, C. J.). March 16, 1944, No. 4956. [Class 98 (ii)] A photographic image is formed in an exposed silver salt emulsion having incorporated therein a developing agent by subjection to moist vapours of such chemical composition to cause the pH of the emulsion to rise until the developing agent develops the latent image. The emulsion may be a silver bromide, chloride, or bromiodide emulsion, and may be a modified Lippmann type emulsion. The developing agent added thereto may be hydroquinone, metol, amidol, or p-phenylenediamine, and a stabilizing agent, e.g. sodium sulphite, may also be added. The exposed material is treated with alkaline vapours such as moist ammonia vapours or vapours produced by heating an aqueous solution of a volatile amine (e.g. vapours produced by heating aqueous ammonium hydroxide or aqueous methylamine or ethylamine) or, where the emulsion contains sodium sulphite, by treatment with acetone vapour. After development, the material may be treated with acid vapours to stop development. In an example, to a fine grain gelatino silver bromiodide emulsion is added hydroquinone and sodium sulphite, and the emulsion is coated on a glass, film, or paper support. The exposed material is developed by treatment with vapours obtained by heating aqueous ammonium hydroxide or aqueous methylamine or ethylamine, is subjected to a stream of compressed air, and is then treated with vapours from aqueous hydrochloric acid.
